Species text

Distribution
H. distinctus has a scattered and patchy distribution in Wales, central and northern England. There are few records in Scotland and it is rather curiously, apparently absent from southern England. A Palaearctic species recorded from France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland.

Habitat and ecology
H. distinctus occurs in the ground zone in wet habitats including river flood meadows, shingle beds, riverside vegetation and moss. Adults have been recorded between March and December, with a peak in early summer, and possibly again in the autumn.

Status
The species is widespread but rare and there appears to be a long term decline.

Threats
None currently known although the drainage of flood meadows and 'tidying up' of river banks might represent a potential threat.

Management and conservation
Avoid unnecessary realignment and tidying up of river courses and disturbance to riverine shingle banks.
