A RARE SPIDER NEW TO CHESHIRE by M. J. Fulton

No. 29 November 1980

Glyphesis cottonae (La Touche). Although this little spider is frequent in the Dorset counties its distribution is very limited, Cumberland being the only county north of Dorset from which it has been recorded. In April of this year 1980 I took two females and one male at a spot in Delamere Forest known to many of our members as Black Lake. Ihis is a man-made lake much of which is covered in sphagnum. Conifers surround the lake, one or two of which have managed to grow in the lake itself, giving it a rather sinister appearance.

Three hours were spent on this, my first visit to the lake, during which a male Perimones (Saltilatlas) britteni as well as two males and one female Erigonella ignoblis were also taken. It is interesting to point out that all three species were found in the wetter and what seemed to be warmer parts of the sphagnum. They were all taken using a pooter after shaking the moss over a polythene sheet. A second visit in May failed to produce any more specimens.

All specimens mentioned were checked by Mr. D. W. Mackie and Dr. Peter Merrett.
