Distribution
H. excisa occurs in the wetter, northern and western parts of Britain. It is absent from most of south-eastern England, rarely found in areas with less than 700 mm rainfall per year. This species is exclusively European (Platnick 1998) and is widespread in north-western and central Europe.

Habitat and ecology
This spider is found amongst low plant growth in a variety of wetland habitats (seeps, reed-beds, alder carr and marshes). It may also be found in damp, broad-leaved woodland amongst Chrysosplenium oppositifolium mats. In upland blanket bogs specimens often inhabit clumps of Polytrichum commune. Mature females are present throughout the year, males between June and November. Egg-sacs have been noted in March and June.

Status
Uncommon in north and west Britain.
