Species text

Distribution
The species is apparently confined to central southern and south-east England. It is fairly widespread in western and central Europe.

Habitat and ecology
S. palliardii occurs in mature wettish heathland and chalk grassland. Adult males are found from September to March, with most activity in October, November, February and especially March. Adult females are found throughout the year.

Status
The spider has been recorded from very few locations since 1992. It was always very local, but abundant where found but appears to have suffered major decline in area of occupancy over the past 30 years. It is apparently absent from many areas that would appear to be suitable, but this is probably largely the result of a lack of appropriate collecting in suitable areas.

Threats
The loss of heathland and chalk grassland to agriculture and forestation.

Management and conservation
Maintain some areas of mature heathland by rotational management in small areas and control scrub growth on chalk grassland.
