DistributionS. elegans is widespread north of a line from south Wales to the Humber northwards, but mostly absent further south. The species is widespread in north-western and central Europe.
Habitat and ecology
The spider is found in grass, moss and undergrowth, often in wet or marshy places. It is also recorded under stones on high ground up to 980 m. In southern England it appears to be confined mainly to high ground (Locket et al. 1974). Adults are mainly found from early to mid-summer.
Status
Rather uncommon, but less so in the north.
