Species text

Distribution
The species is widespread but scattered in much of Britain. It is widespread in western and central Europe.

Habitat and ecology
L. tenebricola is predominantly a woodland spider found in leaf litter and moss, under stones or bark, under a variety of broad-leaved trees, including oak, sycamore, lime, birch, alder and willow. It has been swept out of tussocks of grass or woodrush, shaken from sedge litter, extracted from a wood ants' nest, and from a pile of hay on a roadside verge. Occasionally it may be beaten from the shrub layer, or found on tree trunks. Adults of both sexes have been recorded mainly in early to mid-summer.

Status
More common in the north than the south, where it is rather local.
